最有用的將要資源主要分成兩個部分——概述拜占庭歷史的作品和著眼於某一特定時期的作品。在前一類中，我參考最多的是沃倫·特裏高德詳盡的歷史敘述和諾威奇勛爵的三卷本著作。蒂莫西·格雷戈裏的作品也很重要，當然，愛德華·吉本的作品極具分量。在後一類中，我主要參考了喬納森·哈裏斯的作品，關於馬其頓王朝則多借鑒史蒂芬·朗西曼的作品。在詳細描繪帝國最後的時刻時，我需要感激羅傑·克勞利和唐納德·尼科爾，尤其是後者關於君士坦丁·德拉加塞斯所做的研究。
